Sturgis Baptist Church was organized in 1885 by Rev. J.T. Freeman, pastor of First Baptist Church, Starkville. Services were held in the school until a building could be erected. The first church was built in 1891 and located on a lot that is now the town cemetery near the Presbyterian Church. Some of the early members were Dr. Oscar Barron, Mr. And Mrs. Stroud, Mrs. Alec Stroud, Oliver Quinn, Roscoe and Myrtle McVey, Ben Tomlinson and family, the George D. Morgan family, Eliza, Ella, and Alice Hunt. The membership was about 26.
In 1915 a storm destroyed the church. Services were held in the school from 1915 to 1919. A new church was built in 1920 on a lot bought from G. R. McElvaney at Montgomery St. and Highway 12. In 1950, the current brick veneer church was built on the current Highway 12 location.
